Microbial faecal pollution of river water in a watershed of tropical Ethiopian highlands is driven by diffuse pollution sources

چکیده
Abstract Tropical communities in the developing world depend heavily on riverine systems for their socioeconomic development. However, these resources are poorly protected from diffuse pollution, and there is a lack of quantitative information regarding microbial pollution characteristics water, despite frequently reported gastrointestinal diseases. The aim our study was to apply faecal taxation (i.e., pellet counting representative test areas estimate potential availability sources) combination with detailed microbiological analysis environment elucidate importance pollution. To realize this approach, ambient pellets, multiparametric data set standard indicator bacteria (SFIB), including Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens spores enterococci catchment soil river number water physicochemical variables were analysed during one-year cycle. We demonstrated that abundance which consistently counted at reference sites catchment, associated water. Water SFIB, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, conductivity total suspended solids strongly linked pellets as by principal component (PCA). Elevated concentrations SFIB absence rainfall also suggested direct input into livestock (e.g., watering) humans bathing). Statistical analyses further revealed quality investigated not influenced potentially occurring soil. This demonstrates sources major drivers Ethiopian highlands. In addition, new successfully applied integrated approach could be very useful predictive models, would aid forecasting tropical countries.

متن کاملIdentification of primary sources of faecal pollution
Waterborne pathogens from faecal pollution continue to be major contributors to outbreaks of infectious disease in many areas around the world. While developed countries have made much progress in municipal wastewater treatment and management of agricultural wastes, faecal contamination of source waters for drinking, recreation and rearing of shellfish still contributes to outbreaks of infectio...
